An inspiring and beautiful work environment with outstanding coworkers awaits you.PurposeThe Arborist/Land Steward will provide the technical skills required for the management of natural landscapes at the Wildflower Center. The ideal candidate will perform various types of landscape maintenance and restoration practices, including invasive species control. They will participate in prescribed burns and work to enhance ecosystem health and diversity.Job ResponsibilitiesOperate tractor, skid steer, and other equipment to perform landscape management tasks. Prune trees and remove brush by using chainsaws and other tools. Maintain tools and equipment necessary to perform job duties.Participate in prescribed burns (on and offsite).Conduct seed collection and planting to augment native oak savannah landscape and enhance wildflower displays.Control weeds and invasive species through herbicide application, physical and/or mechanical removal.Maintain and repair decomposed granite trails.Assist in data gathering for research projects.Develop and supervise volunteer crews to assist with tasks and program needs. Provide exceptional and safe guest experience. Support special events outside of normal working hours.Other duties as assigned.Required QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED.Two years of experience directly related to job duties.Ability to operate and maintain outdoor power tools (chainsaws, line trimmers, etc.) and motorized equipment (farm tractors, compact loaders, all-terrain vehicles, woodchippers).Knowledge of Central Texas native and invasive species.Ability to effectively communicate project and program information to internal and external customers.Must be able to lift, push, or pull 50 pounds.Ability to work in all extreme weather conditions.Must have a valid current Texas Class C Driver License.Must have a current non-commercial political pesticide applicators license under Texas Department of Agriculture or be able to obtain license within six (6) months of employment.Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.Preferred QualificationsGraduation with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in the Natural Sciences such as Ecology, Conservation Biology, Botany, Forestry, or another related area. General knowledge of local vegetation and ecosystems.Experience with land management and land restoration in Central Texas.Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).Ability and experience working independently and remotely on vegetation management, equipment operations, and wildfire prevention or mitigation projects.Previous completion of, or ability to complete, training and physical fitness testing to the standards of the National Wildfire Coordinating Group Firefighter Type 2, including the arduous level work capacity test.ISA Certified Arborist.Tree climber experience.Driving RequiredThis job requires a class “C” operator’s driver’s license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.
