Pickle Research Campus in North Austin.PurposeWe are seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a permanent position within the Bureau’s hydro/geology research group. This position will ultimately see many opportunities for a wide range of research activities but, in service to the Bureau’s role as the state geological survey, a strong focus on Texas water systems and resources is expected. Initially, this position will be a key member of a team conducting a research program intended to assemble and synthesize a full suite of Texas water resource/systems data in order to: (a) assess the impact of historical drought on water resources/systems, (b) consider prospective drought scenario impacts, and (c) evaluate drought risk and resilience. This research program is anticipated to yield significant insights for Texas water resource management and planning processes as well as provide a strong foundation for further research projects.ResponsibilitiesPerform research in the hydro/geology field, including analysis and interpretation of large datasets using various analytical, statistical, and numerical techniquesCollaborate and coordinate with research program team membersContribute to the publication of scientific papers and presentation of findings to stakeholdersProposal development and other duties as assignedRequired QualificationsM.S. in Earth Science (e.g. Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Geology, Geography), Civil Engineering, or closely related field with at least two (2) years of relevant professional experience. Demonstrated experience and aptitude within a hydrology/hydrogeology context with: (a) data analytics, wrangling, management, and synthesis, (b) numerical, statistical, and analytical modeling environments (e.g. Python), and (c) GIS analytics. Ability and desire to effectively: (a) manage, assimilate, and analyze complex datasets, (b) disseminate research project results to professional peers, (c) work within an integrated team of scientists, engineers, and economists in a dynamic environment, and (d) meet deadlines. Professional demeanor, excellent interpersonal skills, and superb written and oral communication skills.Preferred QualificationsDemonstrated aptitude and experience with: (a) assembling and synthesizing disparate water-related datasets, (b) artificial intelligence/machine learning techniques applied to hydrology/hydrogeology, (c) hydrogeology, (d) groundwater modeling environments (e.g. MODFLOW, FlowPy), (e) surface water flow and appropriation modeling, and (f) drought metrics development.
